The afternoon bus from Houay Xai to Chiang Mai is the simplest way to finish a Laos trip and be back in Northern Thailand the same evening. It is the return leg for travellers who came in on the Mekong slow boat or by train to Huay Xai: pickup at your Houay Xai hotel, the shuttle across the Fourth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge, and the onward minivan through Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai, arriving around 9 pm.
